Modernisation of the Tram Line in Košice - Trieda SNP
KOŠICE - BRENS STERED Track Noise Absorber with Water Retention Function
The extensive modernisation of the Košice tram network, including the key section on Trieda SNP, took place under the MET1 project (Modernisation of Tram Lines), primarily between 2016 and 2018. Work on the adjacent roads and utility networks continued in the summer of 2018. The aim was to speed up transport and reduce noise. Key milestones and facts of the 2018 modernisation:
- Scope of works: Included the section on Trieda SNP, which followed on from the reconstruction of the roundabout Moldavská – Alejová – Trieda SNP.
- Junction modification: The original complex level tram junction at Moldavská Road was rebuilt into a modern rail roundabout with a radius of 40 m. The removal of the track crossing reduced wear and noise.
- Project objective: Introduction of a tram priority system at signalised intersections, reduction of noise and vibrations from tram traffic, and shortening of travel times.
- Technology: BRENS STERED noise and water-retention absorbers with a surface of high-quality artificial turf: At selected intersections, the artificial turf was replaced with drought-tolerant sedums, creating a permanently green, low-maintenance and visually high-quality track surface.
- Benefits: Significant reduction of noise, vibrations and dust in the city centre, improvement of residents’ quality of life and enhancement of the attractiveness of the urban boulevard of the modern housing estate.
- Exposure period: From 30 April 2018 to the present – long-term operation confirms the reliability of the system and its suitability for further implementations.
- Track parameters: Double-track line with a length of 2,297 m in straight sections or horizontal curves, variable longitudinal gradient, design speed 60 km/h, track grid in ballast, NT1 grooved rail on Sb6 sleepers, rigid rail fastening. Length of the line with BRENS STERED absorbers – 1,336 m (approx. 9,360 m2).
