KOŠICE - Nad Jazerom
Modernisation of the Tram Line in Košice - Nad Jazerom - 2026
KOŠICE - Modernisation
of Tram Lines - Stage 2, UČS 17 and UČS 18
SO 17-05-01: TÚ junction VSS (exclusive) - Važecká turning loop (exclusive), superstructure of the track, comprehensive renewal of the line including replacement of rails, sleepers and fastenings, subgrade improvement and drainage works. The project also includes improving the running characteristics of trams, reducing noise and vibrations in the surrounding built-up area, and increasing the safety of passengers and other road users on this busy section between the VSS junction and the Nad jazerom housing estate.
SO 18-05-01: Važecká turning loop, superstructure of the track, modernisation of the turning loop aimed at increasing its capacity, reliability and comfort for passengers. It includes replacement of the track superstructure, adjustment of platform edges, improved access for persons with reduced mobility and orientation, and preparation for the deployment of modern low-floor tram vehicles, which will ensure smoother and more environmentally friendly urban transport in this part of Košice.
BRENS ABSORBER – 2G
WITH NATURAL VEGETATION SURFACE – SEDUM SPECIES
The BRENS ABSORBER – 2G inter‑track noise absorber with water retention function represents an innovative solution for the safe operation of trams on grassed tracks while at the same time creating a healthy environment in the urban area. It actively contributes to the cultivation of public space without limiting the full functionality of the rail track. It was developed at BRENS EUROPE on the basis of professional research and has been long‑term proven in operation in several cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. BRENS ABSORBER - 2G is an original product of the company and is constantly evolving thanks to further innovations. It provides a significant reduction in noise and vibration (6–12 dB) for quieter and more comfortable operation.
Basic details and interesting facts about the project:
- Location: from the VSS junction to the Važecká turning loop
- Greening technology: Patented BRENS ABSORBER - 2G absorbers with a surface made of sedum mats, which create a permanently green, low‑maintenance and visually changing coloured surface of the track. The vegetation surface is separated from the running rails by removable vulcanised rubber profiles STRAILastic, i.e. it is not in contact with the rails. STRAILastic profiles safely and permanently protect the rail fastenings from increased corrosion caused by covering the track. The sandwich panels of the BRENS ABSORBER - 2G absorber contain a proven water‑retaining synthetic material Retex.
- Benefit: The fully segregated tram track, with its green design, has brought both an improvement of the public space in the Nad Jazerom housing estate and fast, safe transport. It has enhanced the attractiveness of the reconstructed tram line.

- Reduction of dust and effective capture of airborne particles (approx. 3.7 kg/m2 per year) for cleaner air
- Reduction of heat accumulation from solar radiation (by approx. 40%) and thus mitigation of the “urban heat island” effect
- Decrease in surface temperature on hot days (by approx. 10–13 °C) and a more pleasant microclimate around the track
- Controlled retention of rainwater in absorbers (up to 80 l/m2) to relieve the sewer network and improve water management
- Gradual and long-term evaporation of water from absorbers compared to conventional soils (up to 70% higher efficiency) for a more stable moisture regime
- 98% share of recycled materials in products based on circular economy principles and maximum use of secondary raw materials
- 100% recyclability of all materials used in the spirit of the circular economy
- Safe movement of integrated rescue system vehicles in emergencies thanks to a stable surface
- Safe movement of maintenance vehicles and easy disassembly of the surface for quick maintenance or track repair
- High aesthetic value of public space thanks to the extensive sedum-based vegetated surface
