New Tram Line in Olomouc

Nové Sady - Povel

OLOMOUC - Track noise absorber with water retention function BRENS - 1G

The new tram line to Nové Sady (Stage II), almost 1.2 km long, connects Trnkova Street with the U Kapličky area. The construction introduces modern elements to reduce noise and vibrations. A major innovation in the area is the so‑called green tracks.

Noise and vibration reduction measures

  • Modern track bed: The superstructure is laid in anti‑vibration mats using damping elements that significantly reduce the transmission of vibrations into the subsoil and surrounding buildings.
  • Absorbers: Recycled synthetic and rubber materials and absorbers that capture noise directly at the source were used, reducing noise levels by 5 to 9 dB.
Green track (Green rails)
  • Greening: Part of the line in Rooseveltova Street and Schweitzerova Street features a green track superstructure with sedum mats.
  • Water retention: The green strip with BRENS track noise absorbers with a water retention function acts as a natural element that helps retain rainwater and contributes to a better microclimate in the housing estate.

Basic details and interesting facts about the project:

  • Location: Rooseveltova Street (Trnkova stop) and Schweitzerova Street (BILLA shopping centre)
  • Greening technology: Innovative noise and water-retention absorbers BRENS - 1G with a surface made of sedum mats, which create a permanently green, low-maintenance and visually changing coloured surface of the track. The vegetated surface is separated from the running rails by removable rubber elements, i.e. it is not in contact with the rails.
  • Benefits: The partially segregated tram line, routed outside the central street alignment within the carriageway, has brought, through its green design, both an improvement in the public space of the Nové Sady housing estate and fast, safe transport. It has enhanced the attractiveness of the new tram line.
  • Period of operation: From 11 July 2022 to the present – current operation confirms the full functionality of the green tram line with innovative absorbers and its suitability for further applications
  • Track parameters: New double-track line approximately 1,200 m long, in straight sections and in horizontal curves, with minimal changes in longitudinal gradient, design speed 60 km/h, track grid in ballast (in the carriageway section stabilised with fly ash suspension) or PJD - Wtram, NT1 grooved rail on B03 sleepers.
